BSNL is expected to launch its 4G and 5G networks on August 15

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to launch commercial 4G services as well as their 5G service in stand-alone (NSA) configuration on the 15th of August, the day of India’s Independence Day 2022. The chief executive officer and chairman of the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), Rajkumar Upadhyay disclosed the news at an event in the industry. He explained that the state-owned telecom was conducting demonstration of concept (POC) for 4G, while working on 5G simultaneously.

Private Indian Telcos had already started their 4G network couple of years ago. However, BSNL was unable to launch it because it had financial issues the process of bringing it to market. The BSNL 4G network is fully operational and the company plans to launch it when commercial agreements are signed. We can anticipate BSNL to launch the 5G SA connection by the end of Q3 2023. BSNL has worked with IT consulting and services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to conduct field tests at Ambala as well as Chandigarh within North India. The state-owned Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) has also joined forces with C-DoT for other products that are indigenous to India including the main network.

The government-owned research institute C-DoT and top educational institutions such as The Indian Institute of Technology are taking a leading part in the development of India’s tech ecosystem in the telecom sector. BSNL will use this same Indian 4G technology when it launches its services by 2022.
Furthermore the government is also promoting the utilization of Indian entrepreneurs to develop indigenous technology and applications. To lessen its dependence on foreign vendors, India has been trying to encourage the development of domestically-developed technology and goods as element of their Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) policy.
